I’m coming to church and I don’t know anybody. Where do I start?
Whether you’ve been to church before or not, everyone is welcome at Gateway.
When you come for the first time, visit our welcome lounge at the back of the church. We’d love to meet you, make you a cuppa and answer any questions you may have.
What does a typical Sunday church service look like?
Every Sunday has contemporary music, prayer, and a message based on the Bible that is relevant and helpful to your life. Sometimes we’ll hold baby dedications or baptisms, and there’s usually a story or two about how Jesus is changing lives in our community, our nation and our world. At the end of every service, we always offer an opportunity for people to be prayed for.
What should I wear?
We’re a fairly laid-back group of people. It’s up to you what you wear, but if you wear what you’d normally wear to go to the shops, you won’t be out of place.
What is there for my kids to do during church services?
At our 8am and 10am services we run programs for kids and youth aged from 2-15.
Check In opens 15 minutes before each service for Kidlings (2-5 yrs) and Kidzone (Prep to Yr 6). Our friendly Kids Volunteers (we’re the ones with the green shirts) will help your family register. New or visiting families will need to register each child at our Kidlings or Kidzone Welcome Desks. Your child will then be given a name tag with a parent pick up tag. One of our volunteers will them lead your child into our Kidzone Auditorium or Kidlings age groups to meet some awesome leaders and new friends.
Youth Church or ‘YC’ is our exciting Sunday morning church environment for students in Grades 7-12. It runs at 8am & 10am and is for teens and run by our teens. We meet at Gateway in the Loft (above Kidzone) and we enjoy high every engaging time together where we learn about God and grow in community with one another. Meet a member of the Welcome Crew at the bottom of the stairs to make new friends on your first visit!
I’m interested in finding out more about Jesus and what it means to be a Christian.
We run small groups called Starting Point, and this is a great place for you to start. It’s a safe place to ask questions and find out what it means to have a relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ. As a group we work through God’s story and find out how we fit into this bigger picture.
What’s Gateway’s history?
We began as Holland Park Baptist Church in 1928, with a small Sunday School that grew from nine kids to 60 within only a few weeks. Throughout the years the church has continued to grow as we have reached out to our community with the life changing message of Jesus.
In 1993 we moved to our current site on 27 acres of bushland at Mackenzie. Our main auditorium is the old Queensland Pavilion from Expo 88. We’ve had huge changes over the decades, but one thing has always and will always be the same. Gateway is a church where everyone is welcome to come and hear the life changing message of Jesus.
What’s the difference between the Mackenzie and Ormeau campuses? How are they connected?
We’re one church with two campuses, with Ormeau campus starting in 2012. Visit either campus on a Sunday and you’ll find the leadership, vision, heart and style of our services are all the same.
We administer our church centrally via the head office at Mackenzie, but have services, ministries and community connections in both locations.
