When Jesus announced the beginning of his ministry, he read from Isaiah 61 and declared that He had been sent to bring freedom for the prisoners and to set the oppressed free. Throughout Jesus ministry, we see His power to set free those that were imprisoned by their own sin and those that were oppressed by the sins of others. When Jesus died and rose again, He destroyed the power of sin once and for all, giving us free access to the love and power of God. Jesus came to set us free from whatever stops us living in the fullness of God’s love and power.
Every week we will use a similar teaching pattern to reinforce a simple pathway to find freedom in Christ.
We have created a three part video conversation between Pastor Derek Peters and Psychiatrist Dr Stephen Stathis addressing the following topics. You will find these videos under Life Group Videos on the tabs above.
The Devil lies to us about our identity in Christ. The lie is always designed to distort our identity, damage our lives and diminish our power. If we believe the lie in our mind we will continue to behave according to the lie and our lives will be crippled by sin. To break the cycle of damaging behaviour in our lives we need to identify the lie that is distorting our identity and defining our lives.
Once we have identified the lie and the damaging behaviour that follows from believing the lie, we will teach the truth about the new identity that Christ has given us through faith in His death and resurrection. When we believe the truth about our new identity in Christ, we will begin to behave according to that truth.
Each week we will memorise a key Scripture that contains a truth about our new identity in Christ, to demolish the lies that we have believed about ourselves in the past. Download Memory Verse Cards.
When we surrender our lives to Christ we will walk in step with the Spirit and be empowered by the Spirit to stay free from whatever stopped us from living in the fullness of God’s love and power.
Our week of prayer will be a powerful time to discover and declare our freedom in Christ. During the week we will meet together in each of our current and future Gateway campuses to pray for one another and for our communities to be set free from whatever stops us living in the fullness of God’s love and power. Each night, we will spend time confessing to God the lies we have believed; declaring together the freedom we have in Christ and crying out together for our community to find freedom in Christ.
