His Name Shall Be

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace

The early chapters of Isaiah (1–8) paint a striking picture of both judgement and hope. God’s people had abandoned His ways, embracing idolatry, injustice, and the values of the nations around them.

Isaiah prophesied the destruction of Israel and the exile that would follow. Yet, even amid this warning, a thread of hope emerges: though Israel will be cut down, out of the stump will come something new—a King who will reign over a different kind of kingdom.

This new kingdom will bring light to darkness, peace to conflict, and justice where there was none. In Isaiah 9:6, we learn how God will bring about this redemptive future: through a child.

This child will be fully human yet fully divine, a King who will rule with wisdom and peace, and whose kingdom will never end. Isaiah’s prophecy points to the most astonishing moment in history: the transcendent God stepping into humanity as one of us. Into a world marked by brokenness, injustice, and turmoil, God speaks His promise of restoration and hope—the coming of Jesus. This Christmas, we will explore the four titles prophesied over the person of Jesus: Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

Each week, we will unpack how these titles reveal the character of Jesus and the deep, personal hope He brings to our lives and our world.
